The Smartphone Revolution
The history of the mobile phone can be traced back to the 1970s when Motorola engineer Martin Cooper made the first mobile phone call on a handheld device in 1973. This early mobile phone, the Motorola DynaTAC, was a far cry from the sleek, feature-packed smartphones we use today. It weighed over 2 pounds and was nearly 10 inches tall. However, the breakthrough paved the way for mobile telephony.
In the 1980s and 1990s, mobile phones became increasingly common, although they were still quite bulky and expensive. The advent of the second generation (2G) networks in the early 1990s introduced digital communication, which enabled clearer calls and the ability to send short text messages (SMS). The integration of SMS marked the beginning of the broader functionality of mobile phones beyond voice communication.
